Move Your YouTube Channel's Google+ Linkage With This Nifty Tool

Since the introduction in early 2012 of Google+ for YouTube we have been dogged by the fact that the linkage we establish between our YouTube channels and Google+ products becomes permanent after the 14 day cooling off period.  To add insult to injury all YouTube channels created nowadays come with their Google+ product perma-linked and if we don't choose well enough we could end up regretting our choices.

Until this week moving the linkage from one Google+ product to another was possible only with the help of support.  And now we have this über cool tool which allows us to do this ourselves:

You will find a link to it in YouTube settings / Advanced of the YouTube channel you wish to move to a different Google+ product placed as seen above.

Once you click on the link you are shown a super visual interpretation of your current set-up and a box to click to begin the process:

The easy to understand interface gets even better with the next screen where you will see your choices:

If we look at this third screen you will see that I am using my test YouTube channel Skitrel Mark 5 (shown on the left) which is linked to a Google+ Page of that name (shown on the right) and have the option to link it to my Google account's Google+ Profile (with a photo of Alice) and another Google+ Page (Skitrel Mark 7, sporting its default +Page avatar) on the same Google account.  This is important-  you can only choose Google+ products which exist/are owned by the Google account the YouTube channel and its current Google+ product are owned by.  As per the little note about this on the box with the choices.  :)

There are a couple of caveats here:

1.  You cannot link to a Google+ Profile if you have deleted the Google+ Profile as seen here:

It just wont appear as an option because it doesn't exist.  And if that is what you wish to link the YouTube channel to then you would need to stop the process and go to Google+ in your Google account and create a new Google+ Profile before returning to your YouTube channel and starting the move process over.

2.  You cannot (currently) move the new style custom YouTube /c/ URL with the YouTube channel although you are not told this as seen here:

This is not entirely intuitive behaviour but if you appreciate that the /c/ URL of your YouTube channel is associated with the matching +URL and that that +URL belongs to the Google+ product you are moving from, it begins to make sense.  It "stays" with its matching +URL and is associated to the YouTube channel only where it is linked to the matching +URL using Google+ product.  Annoying, no?  Meh.

Final consideration when choosing the Google+ product to relink your YouTube channel to-  every Google+ product may only have one YouTube channel on it at any one time.  This means that if you pick a Google+ product on that bottom list which has its own channel already you will first be asked to delete it (or cancel the action of course) as seen here:

Be very careful not to delete a YouTube channel you might be super-attached to!  Recovering a user-deleted YouTube channel is not easy at best of times but once you move your other YouTube channel to the deleted channel's Google+ product- all the more confusing for everyone!

Instead-  consider moving the "blocking" YouTube channel to a different Google+ product before moving your YouTube channel to its Google+ product.  ;)  That way you keep both!

Here is a video I made about the process (I don't address the /c/ URL caveat in it as I didn't want to confuse folk but might update the video as the tool's development progresses):

Any questions please drop me a note or, better still, pop over to the fora for serious trouble-shooting.

  1. Hi! Will my view counts (total and per video) be transferred over as well if I move my YouTube channel from my Google+ profile to a Google+ page? What about comments on the videos? Ad earnings?

    Thanks so much!!!

    1. Hey Kristin,

      Very good question!

Yes, everything (uploaded videos, channel art, video/channel comments/views, subscribers and, hehe- even penalties acquired with that channel) associated with the YouTube channel will move with it. The only things which wont (if this even applies) are its custom /c/ URL and its avatar as those are derived from the matching +URL of the linked Google+ product being moved from.

And because both Google+ products are products under the same master Google account even those *you* subscribe to will stay with the YouTube channel. :)

  2. I tried this last night (as I have detailed here: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/youtube/account-set-up-sign-in-and-configuration/report-a-technical-issue/chrome/x9JRSf03MIk), and instead of transferring my channel, it deleted it completely! My subscriptions, videos, and channel have evaporated into the multiverse! Please help!!

    1. As you can see from the screen-grabs the only time there is a chance to delete a YouTube channel (albeit sending you to the regular Delete Channel page) is where the Google+ product being linked to already HAS a YouTube channel linked to it and not being free to link to. This is indicated in image 6. with the pop-up, just before the video. But I addressed this over on the help forum where I found your thread without knowing you'd posted here and on YouTube. You will need to use the link I provided you with (https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/55759) to try recovery for a user-deleted YouTube channel. Good luck!

  3. First of all, thank you thank you thank you for your blogs and videos. I have spent literally hours combing through the Help Center and Forums trying to understand/change some of these options with pages and profiles.

Now that I have a better understanding of what is going on, I have a two part question and will do my best of making this all clear:

My YouTube account is tied to my Google+ PAGE. I don't use this page at all and would like to do away with it altogether as it's just not necessary. My first question would be whether or not it is possible to delete the only G+ PAGE linked to the account and have only the G+ PROFILE. All of my Google+ happenings are on my G+ PROFILE, whereas the G+ PAGE has only a profile photo.

I believe (again, it's been a few hours) that when I tried to delete the G+ Page, it said I could not because it was tied to a YouTube account. That begin the exploration into this apparently fairly new option. Now while my G+ happenings were strictly on the G+ PROFILE, my YouTube business is all connected to the G+ PAGE. I found the steps to move the YouTube account between G+ products. I followed the steps exactly. EXACTLY. So. Many. Times. To no avail.

I do have ownership of both products and they are both on the same account. Originally, the G+PROFILE was linked to a virtually 'empty' YouTube account, the swap prompted me that I would deleting the YouTube channel of the product I was switching to. I confirmed and continued following the steps also listed above. Every time I got an error stating only "oops, something went wrong. An error occurred while preparing the transfer" as if that were helpful at all.

Since I continued to get the same error page (just a picture of what looks like a stack of old brown TVs) I thought it may help if I deleted the G+ PROFILE channel myself (instead of including it in the swap process), then move the YouTube channel to it. I first received a few log-in errors on the YouTube end; after resolving the log-in and attempting the steps once more, I received the same error. I know the deletion was successful as it no longer prompted me that the G+ PRFILE was already connected... but it made no difference in the end.

Please, please, please tell me you have an answer to this as Google/YouTube is literally impossible to contact for "non-paying users" and I am so. freaking. tired of this. I have screencaps of the entire process if you would like them.

Although I'm frustrated as all hell, I do appreciate all of your help. Ignore any snippiness as it is not directed at you ;p

    2. OK- the answer to your problem is very simple: it is a bug on YouTube/Google's part.

Here is where to go and where to add three things: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/youtube/XQ3TenvTiQE

      The three things:
      1. YouTube channel URL,
      2. Currently linked Google+ (Profile) URL, and-
      3. "target" Google+ (Page) URL

  4. I have combed over all of your helpful hints about recovering my gmail account and password. However, the account recovery form does not work if the hacker has changed all of your recovery hints. When I try to recover my password, it shows his name and his recovery email address. The proof is on my youtube channel which shows my gmail account name in the URL as well as my company logo. My videos there are important to my job. If you can help me in anyway, or direct me to somebody at google who can, I'd appreciate it.

  6. am facing an URGENT issue. I noticed I have two channels showing up under my account-one with my regularly uploaded videos, views and subscribers and an empty one. So i came across a button suggesting to connect two channels. I clicked on it and now all I see is the empty channel and i cannot find any data from my actual channel, it's nowhere to be found. Seems like i have accidentally deleted my channel. Please tell me if there is a way to bring it back, I'd very much appreciate your support. Thanks in advance.
